Maintenance Superintendent


Maintenance Superintendent    Blackfoot, ID

Basic Function:
The maintenance superintendent directs the plant maintenance program to maintain the plant’s ability to produce product in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Routinely coordinates with planning and the Process Leaders to establish downtime to perform maintenance. Provides direct supervision for maintenance team leaders and mechanics to promote safe work habits and work environment. Provides the Engineering expertise and project management skills for the multitude of projects required to keep the plant in proper working order. Monitors preventive and predictive maintenance programs to ensure programs support operations effectively and makes modifications as required. Reviews downtime and works with operations to identify and eliminate root causes. Provides technical assistance to mechanics and operations as needed.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities (in order of importance):

  1. Safety: The Maintenance Superintendent monitors maintenance team for adherence to safety policies and provides training as required. Continually reviews plant for safety issues and utilizes resources to resolve those issues. Sets the example with safe work habits.
  2. Maintenance Technical Support: The Maintenance Superintendent provides Engineering assistance to the operations team to resolve technical issues effecting line performance. This support is in predictive, preventive and reactive maintenance with the emphasis on being proactive to maintain the plant’s ability to produce product. Works closely with storeroom supervisor to insure adequate parts are on hand to support maintenance work.
  3. Project management: Responsible for capital sustaining projects through out the facilities. The projects will vary in size from $3,000 to $150,000 and must be completed on time and under budget. The Process leaders, operators, Technical Services, and mechanics must be utilized in the design process to bring out the best solution to the issue at hand. Must identify profit enhancement projects through out the plants to reduce the overall costs of operation. Projects will not be limited to one facility but all facilities through out Idaho.
  4. Continuous Improvement: The Maintenance Superintendent reviews and analyzes downtime to develop plans to reduce downtime. Works closely with Process Leaders to identify root causes and determine what action needs to be taken to resolve issues, from capital expenditures to preventive maintenance procedures. Directs maintenance mechanics and contractors in fixing the right things right to reduce downtime.
  5. Sanitation/GMP’s/Food Security: The Maintenance Superintendent supports the Process Leaders in meeting audit requirements for Sanitation, GMP’s, and Food Security. Provides training for maintenance team in these areas.
  6. Employee Development/Leadership: The Maintenance Superintendent works closely with the hourly workforce to identify needs in training or equipment. Complete yearly evaluations of performance and provide recommendations for improvement for each hourly employee. Lead by example in supporting organizational initiatives and following Basic Principles.
  7. Fiscal Responsibility: Responsible for establishing and overseeing the budget for assigned areas of responsibility. Provides information to the Idaho Maintenance Manager and Process Leaders on exceptions that impact the budget.
  8. Campus Activities: The maintenance superintendent will travel from plant to plant implementing the best practices from all campus facilities. This may consist of movement to a different facility for extended periods of time to resolve issues that a specific individual may excel in.

 

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily.   • Education and/or Experience:
    • BS degree in Engineering with 5 years experience supervising maintenance mechanics or equivalent experience. Needs to possess leadership and team building skills along with excellent communication skills. Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Language Skills:
    • This position requires the ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, correspondence and memos. In addition, this position requires the ability to write various types of documents, including, but not limited to, instructions, memos, and disciplinary actions. Must have the ability to effectively present information verbally one-on-one and to larger groups.
  • Reasoning Ability:
    • Must be able to creatively apply experience and common sense to a variety of situations, processes and people. Must be able to make technical decisions. Possess the ability to manage several projects concurrently. Be able to recognize lack of direction and motivate organization to take action to correct issues. These issues may include conflicts between employees, equipment malfunctions, and variation in operating conditions.
  • Computer Skills:
    • Must demonstrate strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite, drafting software and be able to effectively use maintenance management software.

The employee must be able to drive a vehicle and will be required to travel in a car and occasionally an airplane.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
