Central Lab Supervisor


Central Lab Supervisor   Blackfoot, ID

Basic Function:
The primary responsibility of this position will be to oversee essential extraordinary tasks including but not limited to: lab equipment maintenance, calibration, and auditing, technician training and proficiency testing, method development and procedure review, standardized program implementation, and records and database management. This person will also be required to cross-train in all functional areas of the South East Idaho Central lab in order to effectively supervise technicians and provide support for vacation and sick leave absences, and non-routine projects.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities (in order of importance):

  • Safety. Promote safety through personal conduct, active participation in safety programs, and by maintaining safe working conditions and environment. Equipment Maintenance. Properly maintain laboratory equipment by developing and implementing preventative maintenance routines. Troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance tasks on complex analytical equipment. Demonstrate proper equipment operation through successful participation in co-lab testing.
  • Data Management & Quality. Develop system(s) and/or procedure(s) for accurate and timely entry of laboratory data. Effectively use databases for data analysis, storage, retrieval, and report generation. Ensure integrity of data by development of and/or participation in laboratory performance evaluation programs.
  • Technician Training. Develop and administer program(s) to demonstrate and challenge lab technician competencies. Maintain training programs and records for new and existing technicians.
  • Test Procedure Maintenance. Continually review and challenge existing test procedures in order to maintain the highest level of safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of testing practices.
  • Team Participation. Promote morale among co-workers by sharing experience and knowledge, participating in company/department functions, and demonstrating the Basic Principles and a “lead by example” attitude towards others.
  • Personal Development. Participate in on-going personal development activities through formal and/or informal training opportunities.

 

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Education and/or Experience:
    • BS degree in a Physical science such as chemistry or microbiology or equivalent experience and demonstration of the ability to perform essential duties. The person must possess and be able to use problem solving skills to independently operate, troubleshoot, and maintain basic laboratory equipment and complex analytical instrumentation. The person should have a good working knowledge of the theory and application of chromatography, spectroscopy, and microbiology as well as possess basic laboratory skills.
  • Language Skills:
    • The ability to effectively communicate both verbally and through written report is critical. The person must be able to read, understand and explain to others in simple language complex technical documents. They must possess excellent technical writing skills to be used to develop clear and accurate test procedures and training materials. They must be able to effectively train other technicians through verbal instruction and hands on demonstration. They must also be able to prepare meaningful and accurate reports of test data.
  • Computer Skills:
    • The person must be familiar with the use of basic office programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. They must also have the ability to quickly learn new equipment specific software programs.
  • Physical Demands:
    • While performing the duties of this job, the person is regularly required to stand for extended periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The person is regularly required to talk and hear in both office and loud production environments. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to sit and operate a personal computer for extended periods of time and be able to drive a vehicle. Position may require occasional travel in a car or airplane.
  • Work Environment:
    • While performing the above duties, the person will be primarily working in a laboratory setting where they will be routinely working with hazardous chemicals. Additionally, they may have opportunity to work within a production process setting where they will be exposed to loud noises, moving equipment and machinery, wet and slippery conditions.
    • The person must be a team player and be able to work well with other technicians, but must also be comfortable in working on their own and have the self-motivation to accomplish assignments with minimal supervision.
