Baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) number 80 million in the United States, and this year marks the first that the eldest are eligible for Social Security. Boomers comprise a huge, sophisticated, food-savvy demographic.
According to Restaurants & Institutions’ New American Diner Study, a higher percentage of boomers than Generations X or Y diners make a sustained effort to eat healthfully at restaurants. Boomers are more likely to frequent casual-dining restaurants, and most likely to patronize a fine-dining establishment.
Whereas many older residents of independent- and assisted-living facilities prefer dinner earlier in the evening and value presentation over menu variety, younger residents in their early 60s—the first boomers—want more choices in meals and services, a more casual atmosphere and more flexible dining times.
Operators can market successfully to boomers by recognizing that food quality and variety coupled with wholesome, healthful preparation are key. Basic American Foods can help: For a wealth of innovative recipes—including many for special diets—prepared with only the highest-quality ingredients, visit http://www.baf.com.
